Haileyville man pleads guilty to firearm assault

MCALESTER, Aug 10, 2012 (McAlester News-Capital - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Haileyville man recently pleaded guilty to multiple firearm charges, including assault.

Michael Joe Lardi, 31, pleaded guilty Aug. 3 in Pittsburg County District Court to five counts, including assault with a dangerous weapon by use of firearm.

Lardi was fined $1,505 and sentenced to 20 years in the custody of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, with the last 12 years suspended.

On Oct. 13, according to a court affidavit, Haileyville Assistant Police Chief Ronnie Steudeman was sitting on the corner of C Street and Grand Avenue at approximately 5:45 p.m. when he heard what sounded like gunshots.

In his affidavit, Steudeman stated that he went to the area where he heard the shots and was met by Lardi, whose right leg appeared to be covered in blood.

"I then asked Mr. Lardi what happened and at first he stated that he had shot himself in the leg and foot. After further questioning, Mr. Lardi changed his story and stated that he and his mother had gotten into a gun fight," the affidavit continues. "Mr. Lardi then stated that she had shot him and he had (allegedly) returned fire in self-defense." In his affidavit, Steudeman stated that after calling in for assistance he "looked up and noticed that Mr. Lardi was walking back to the residence and Mrs. Lardi was standing in the front door and fired two or three rounds at Mr. Lardi. I told Mrs. Lardi to put the gun up and she did." Michael Lardi was transported to the McAlester Regional Health Center, where he was treated for a gunshot wound, the affidavit continues, and he was then taken to the Pittsburg County Jail.
