Images show a reportedly smaller iPhone dock connector

Aug 10, 2012 (Los Angeles Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Photos have hit the Web showing what looks like a smaller dock connector that is expected to be included in the next iPhone.

Apple is rumored to be drastically decreasing the size of its current 30-pin iPhone dock connector for months now, although not many are sure exactly what size the new dock connector will be.

But images that emerged this week show what looks an 8-pin connector, which is drastically smaller than the part used for each of the first five iPhones.

You can see the images of the supposed iPhone part here from French site Nowherelse.fr, which pictured the part next to a USB connector for context.

On the current cables, the dock connector is much wider than the USB connector. The new part, however, seems tiny compared with the USB portion of the cable.

If these pictures are accurate, they are the first images we've seen of the expected smaller dock connector.

But along with the images from the French site, 9 to 5 Mac has also taken a picture related to the dock connector. Its image shows the outline of a new dock connector.

Earlier this week, 9 to 5 Mac reported that a line of code in iOS 6, which is expected to be the operating system for the next iPhone, referenced a 9-pin connector. Now, MacRumors is reporting the connector has eight pins but its metal frame also counts as a pin, which makes it more likely that the images from this week are accurate.
