Friday e-waste collection to benefit Sheriff's Toy Project

Nov 15, 2012 (The Sacramento Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Sacramento-area residents have an opportunity to dispose of their old electronic devices before the holidays and assist schools and needy families in the process.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Toy Project will conduct an e-waste collection Friday in partnership with Heald College. The event is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2910 Prospect Park Drive in Rancho Cordova.

Items that will be accepted include televisions, monitors, computers, laptops, VCRs, stereo equipment, speakers, keyboards, mice, PDAs, digital cameras, zip drives, telephones, cellular phones, printers and copiers, scanners and fax machines.

Items such as household batteries, microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners, furniture, mattresses, chemicals, commercial waste and other debris will not be accepted.

The Sheriff's Toy Project is a Microsoft-registered refurbisher and is required to wipe all hard drives so that no data will be retained, according to a Sheriff's Department news release. The Toy Project, along with Heald College students and staff members, refurbishes donated computers and makes them available to nonprofit organizations, schools and low-income families at no cost. Officials report that more than 1,100 refurbished computers have been given away during the last nine years.

To arrange to have acceptable items picked up, contact Deputy Sam Flores at sflores@sacsheriff.com, or call Officer Cindy Garcia at (916) 361-4571. For more information, see the toyproject.org website, or e-mail instructor Bob Johnston at Robert.Johnston@sacramento.heald.edu.
