Gadgets -Amazon's best Christmas seller: Third Generation Kindle


Internet retail giant, Amazon.com announced in a press release that the third-generation Kindle has surpassed "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)" in popularity. According to the company, on its peak day, Nov. 29, customers ordered more than 13.7 million items worldwide across all product categories. It came to precisely 158 items per second—a world record.

According to Amazon.com (News - Alert) founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, the users of the LCD tablet are mostly the buyers of kindle. He said its light weight, long battery life and Pearl e-Link display that reduces eye strain and workability in outdoor light are some of the features that have made it so popular among the readers, especially the vacation-readers. He added that the $139 price tag (News - Alert)  leaves customers with little to consider before buying a Kindle.

“We're grateful to the millions of customers who have made the all-new Kindle the bestselling product in the history of Amazon—surpassing Harry Potter 7,” he said in a statement.

In the release, Amazon announced that on Christmas Day, more people turned on new Kindles for the first time, downloaded more Kindle Buy Once and Read Everywhere apps, and purchased more Kindle books than on any other day in history. "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" was the most purchased as well as most gifted Kindle book on Christmas Day.

On the peak day this season, Amazon's worldwide fulfillment network shipped over 9 million units across all product categories to over 178 countries, with over 350,000 units to APO/FPO addresses.

One of Amazon's most remote shipments contained: "Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue" and "Toy Story" DVDs, "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul,” and games "NHL 11, Halo Reach and Call of Duty: Black Ops” and was delivered to the hamlet of Grise Fiord—north of the Arctic Circle in Canada.

Earlier this month, Amazon announced that Kindle for Android—the first Kindle app to receive an update that enables users to buy, read and sync over 100 Kindle newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, Newsweek, The Atlantic and many more. Kindle for Android (News - Alert) users can buy a single issue or subscribe to the most popular newspapers and magazines, have them automatically delivered to their Android-powered device, and enjoy a full color reading experience optimized for the touch interface of Android-powered devices.

Additional new features include the ability to buy and download Kindle books and periodicals within the Kindle for Android app, share reading progress via social networks, and zoom closer to images and other graphics. Kindle for Android is the first major e-book app to offer periodicals on the Android platform. The new Kindle for Android app is available from Android Market. Customers who have already downloaded Kindle for Android will receive the update automatically.
