IKEA Now Sells TVs in its Furniture

The company known for its flat-pressed, inexpensive, easy-to-assemble furniture is now going to be selling its wares with built in electronics.

Along with your entertainment system comes with the entertainment, as IKEA has plans to include HDTVs and Blu-ray players, along with a speaker system to go with the furniture.

Known as Uppleva, these new pieces hide wires within the furniture, making for a cleaner appearance.

The Uppleva television will be a full HD LED/LCD Smart TV with Wi-Fi capabilities. It is also equipped with two USB ports, four HDMI ports, and A/V ports. Uppleva will come with a remote that controls all of the built-in functionality.

So now you can have your entertainment center and watch it, too.

“This is a large step for us. We will have an offer that is unique in the market,” IKEA's living room chief Magnus Bondesson said in an interview with Reuters.

“We are launching a new concept where you in one place can buy your furniture and your electronics -- designed for and matched with each other from start.”

The plan is for IKEA to sell combination units, housing both storage space and the dedicated spaces for the electronics equipment, hiding clutter and cabling out of sight. As a guide price, IKEA have suggested 6,500 Swedish crowns ($960 USD) for a combination bench unit, TV and speaker system.

Chinese consumer electronics firm, TCL will be developing all the technology.

This IKEA video demonstrates the Uppleva system in all of its clutterless glory.

Uppleva will be available in Stockholm first, then Milan, Paris, Gdansk and Berlin in June 2012. During autumn 2012 Uppleva is available in all of the stores in Sweden, Italy, France, Poland, Denmark, Spain, Norway and Portugal.
