AT&T (News - Alert) this week launched a new device exclusive to its network, the Pantech Renue, which offers quick-messaging features for the frequent texter. While this phone isn't the latest and greatest in terms of hardware, it doesn't aim to be, instead offering a unique feature likely to appeal to the environmentally conscious: it is constructed from 67 percent recyclable components, something very few phones can claim.
Not quite a smartphone, but offering more than the average feature phone, the Renue is based on the Qualcomm (News - Alert) Brew Mobile Platform, which allows users to customize the look and feel of the device, as well as offering access to important apps. Of course, the phone's physical keyboard aims to make texting a breeze with a full QWERTY layout.
The device's 3.2-inch display is a capacitive touch panel, allowing users to quickly navigate its user interface. Additional features include a three-megapixel camera with video recording capabilities as well as one-touch access to social media, messaging, music, pictures and games.
Renue's casing is UL Environment certified and complies with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) standards, meaning it has had reduced exposure to hazardous materials and harmful toxins such as lead, mercury and cadmium, to name a few. Meanwhile, a preloaded power saver app and Energy Star 2.0 charger help to optimize battery life, while reducing energy consumption.
"This device comes to market just as our eco-ratings system is beginning to appear on packaging. Our goal is to empower consumers to make informed decisions about the technology they use by giving them information on how a device performs against targeted environmental criteria," said Jeff Howard, vice president of the mobile device portfolio at AT&T Mobility, in a press release.
The Pantech Renue is available for $69.99 with a two-year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate.
Pantech also recently announced another quirky device exclusively from Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless: the 4G LTE-capable Pantech Marauder. This Android (News - Alert)-powered device features a dual-interface option, allowing for deeper customization of the Android platform.
AT&T is sponsor of ITEXPO West 2012. To be held Oct. 2-5 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, TX, ITEXPO (News - Alert) is the world’s premier IP communications event. For more information on ITEXPO click here.
