Panasonic Introduces Bluetooth Bone Conduction Headphones at CES

The beauty about CES (News - Alert) is you know you are going to see many gadgets that will make you grin like a Cheshire cat, but the unfortunate thing is they don’t all make to market. Even if they do, success is not guaranteed. The new Panasonic (News - Alert) RP-BTGS10 Bone Conduction Headphone sounds like a great idea, but only time will tell if the market will be receptive.

In a statement from Panasonic, company officials said, “This unique, wireless headphone model provides sound transmission via bone conduction, freeing up a user’s ears for other important sounds and are wireless to ensure they don’t interfere with active users’ activities.”

I don’t know if it is possible to hear two things at once and still be productive, but I am sure there are many multitaskers that will be happy with this speaker.

This technology is used for the hearing impaired on hearing aid devices and based on this application, doctors know your bones can conduct sound. Generally, sound goes through your ear and excites your eardrum, setting the bones in the middle of your ear in motion, which in turn talk to the cochlea in your inner ear, resulting in sound. It is also possible to hear through bone conduction; this is when sound waves travel through the bones and into the inner ear. This process bypasses the outer ear but the end result is the same: you get to interpret the sound.

The Panasonic headphone has a bone conduction microphone that lets the user record voice, take notes or accept phone calls while listening to music or any other content. The microphone picks up the sound through the same process, picking the speakers vibration through the bone conduction.

Another added benefit is, just like hearing aids, these speakers can be used by those that are hard of hearing to watch their favorite TV shows or listen to music. The only requirement is the device has to have a Bluetooth transmitter.

“Panasonic has always been a leader in sound-quality and innovation and with the new RP-BTGS10 Bone Conduction Headphones, we are taking our headphone offerings to the next level of technological and sound advancement. The RP-BTGS10 model will be an ideal companion for sport enthusiasts including cyclists, joggers, runners and more, allowing them the freedom and flexibility of a wireless headphone while also giving them the opportunity to listen to their favorite music while not blocking out other outside sounds.” said Tom Hanston, product category manager, Panasonic Consumer Marketing Company of North America.

The company stated the unit will be available in the fall of 2013 in a variety of colors. The price has not been set, but it will announce it one month prior to shipping the headphones.
