Gadgets -Trimble Unveils GPS Handheld Devices

Trimble reportedly has released the new Trimble (News - Alert) Juno SB and Juno SC handhelds integrated with Global Positioning System technology.

The pocket-sized devices include wireless LAN and Bluetooth connectivity, a 3 Megapixel camera, a 533 MHz processor, 128 MB of onboard memory, a MicroSD/SDHC memory card slot, an all-day battery and a 3.5 inch display.

The Juno series is also available in 10 languages for worldwide users and is compatible with Trimble’s range of Mapping and GIS field and office software.

The company says that applications such as natural resources and mobile enterprise, where positional accuracy is less important, and high productivity is essential, the Juno series handheld is ideal. Incorporating a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with 2 to 5 meter position accuracy, it is specifically designed to maximize yield of positions in hostile environments, such as under forest canopy and up against buildings.

Both the sets – including the Juno SB, pictured right – can achieve GPS positioning accuracy post processed or in real-time with Satellite Based Augmentation Systems such as the U.S. Wide Area Augmentation System, European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System, and Japan’s Multi-Functional Satellite Augmentation System.

“The Juno series handhelds are the ideal solution for GIS-enabled organizations that require high productivity from their mobile field workforce,” said Peter Large, general manager of Trimble’s Mapping and GIS Division.

The Juno SC handheld includes a 3.5G High-Speed Downlink Packet Access broadband cellular modem, as well as data transmission capabilities which helps field workers access e-mail and download large files and maps without making a trip to the office.

The long life battery of the both handhelds allows GPS data collection for a full working day, without the need for recharging. The battery is also field-replaceable, for extended periods away from a power source.

Users can even access personal productivity tools such as Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, Internet Explorer Mobile, and Outlook Mobile, as the handhelds are supported by Microsoft (News - Alert) Windows Mobile version 6.1 operating system.

Company also offers other optional accessories such as OtterBox Defender Series case, which provides additional protection through a high-impact hard polycarbonate shell wrapped in a silicone skin for absorbing bumps and shock.

The Trimble Juno series is currently available through Trimble’s Mapping & GIS distribution channel.
