Gadgets -Socket and German Police Provide Street Side Control

The police force in the German federal state of Lower Saxony is using the Socket SoMo 650 handheld computer for monitoring street side commercial truck controls.

The deployment of 75 SoMo 650 handheld computers will help police officers track data from digital tachographs installed in commercial trucks on the autobahn. The SoMo 650 helps the street police to gain access to the digital tachograph installed in commercial trucks.

The tachograph is used to record data about the vehicle's speed, the duration of its active travel time compared to stationary and other technical information. According to Socket Mobile, the European Union has made the tachographs mandatory for vehicles allowed to carry a total weight of over 3.5 tons and vehicles built to carry at least 9 passengers, if the vehicle is used for commercial purposes.

Through a cabled connection, the data from the tachographs is transferred from the Socket SoMo 650 handheld computer to the servers at the police station, and stored in their records. The extendable and adaptable Socket solution allows the police to more efficiently track traffic violations, and can be used for years to come.

Elaborating on their department’s needs, Frank Rex at the Lower Saxony Police said that their policemen need to be very flexible and precise during street side controls to do an efficient job. The SoMo 650 offers the required portability, and also has the durability, ease-of-use, expandability and secure data transfer options they need for this process.

He also appreciates Socket’s efforts of constantly advancing the solution so that they don’t have to switch to another device on a long-term basis.

Bob Zink, senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing for Socket recognizes that budgets are tight and both public and private organizations have to look for solutions that can be used on a long-term basis and offer a high return on investment.

“Our SoMo 650 can target solutions exactly to meet this need. Working with Lower Saxony's police force, we are pleased to have developed a solution to help streamline processes and maintain order on the autobahn,” he added.

The handheld computer system was implemented by Socket partner, Softwarebüro Zauner & Partner, an innovative software office offering European-wide, proven and future-oriented software solutions for vehicle fleets, transport companies, fueling stations and public authorities for the local or Internet use.
