Gadgets -AT&T Provides Wireless Capability to TomTom's New PND, XL 340S LIVE


Amsterdam-based navigation solutions and digital maps provider TomTom reportedly has signed a new agreement with AT&T, in order to provide wireless connection to company’s new mid-range portable navigation device (PND), XL 340S LIVE.

In a press release, Jocelyn Vigreux, president of TomTom (News - Alert), said the new agreement with AT&T and TomTom will facilitate the XL 340S LIVE PND with wireless capability from AT&T’s network. This will provide drivers and the people on the go with a wide-range of useful, real-time services.

Available in retailers throughout the United States, the new TomTom XL 340S LIVE device will access the AT&T network for its connected services, such as Google (News - Alert) powered local search, real-time traffic information, the TomTom Fuel Price service, TomTom Weather and more.

Officials at TomTom said that all the above services will be preloaded on the device and will work immediately out of the box.

Ideal for drivers, TomTom XL 340S LIVE PND backed by AT&T’s (News - Alert) wireless network will facilitate them with speedy online search for - points of interest, route around traffic, best fuel prices as well as access to latest weather reports. This will in-turn have a significant positive effect on driving and road safety.

Glenn Lurie, president of emerging devices for AT&T, said in the release, "This agreement pairs our expansive wireless network with an advanced and yet easy-to-use device to deliver timely and powerful services to people on the go. We are focused on connecting consumers to the information they want in real-time through innovative devices and TomTom is a great example of how this space is evolving."

Lurie added that this agreement marks an important step in AT&T's strategy to expand the use of its wireless network.

Officials at TomTom said that both the companies have plans to collaborate on more advanced connected features in the future.

Apart from TomTom XL, TomTom also offers other all-in-one navigation devices such as TomTom GO family, TomTom ONE ranges and the TomTom RIDER.

Owning four business units, TomTom, Tele Atlas (News - Alert), Automotive and WORK, TomTom delivers digital maps and dynamic content via Tele Atlas. Offering digital map coverage of over 200 countries and territories worldwide, Tele Atlas powers essential navigation and location-based services (LBS).

TomTom’s automotive business unit develops and sells navigation systems and services to car manufacturers and OEMs, while the company’s WORK business unit integrates communication and smart navigation technology with tracking and tracing expertise.
